Flames Fall to Eagles in Season Finale

LA MIRADA, Calif. - The Bethesda Flames lost to Biola to conclude the regular season by a final of 9-7.

 

The Flames were led offensively by Nathan Munoz (2-5 one run scored, one double), Ryan McPhillips (2-4 one run scored, one run batted in), and Adrian Flores (4-5 two runs scored, two runs batted in, one double).

 

Kevin Maxey and Mario Gonzalez also homered in the contest, their 12th and 6th respectively.

 

The Flames went on top in the first with a Kevin Maxey home run, but gave the lead right back surrendering two in the bottom of the first.

 

They added three more in the fourth with a Mario Gonzalez two-run home run and Ryan McPhillips RBI-single.

 

They again gave up the lead quickly surrendering two in the bottom of the fourth for the Eagles.

 

The Flames went back ahead in the fifth with a Daniel Gutierrez single. The Flames lead was again short-lived as the Eagles matched the run with a solo home run in the bottom of the frame.

 

The score would remain until a four run Eagles sixth inning made it 9-5 Eagles.

 

The Flames would keep fighting. They scored one in the seventh with a Raul Abundis sacrifice fly, then tied it up in the with a three run rally in the eight highlighted by an Adrian Flores single to right that scored two.

 

The Eagles would go ahead for good in the bottom of the eighth, scoring the final two runs to make it 11-9.

 

"I really liked how we competed," said Garrett Trevino. "We found out a couple days ago we would host the NCCAA West Regional so it was a balancing act of competing and preparing while making sure we were 100% going into this weekend. I think this helped prepare us."

The Flames finish the regular season with a 22-20 record. They will host St. Katherine's in the NCCAA West region for a best 2-3 series at Santiago High School with the winner claiming a berth to the NCCAA World Series.
