Kuramoto, Leopards Win Fifth Straight

LA VERNE, CA — Casey Kuramoto scored a game-high 22 points, the Leopards forced 29 turnovers, and the University of La Verne women's basketball team rolled on their way to a 95-53 win over the visiting Bethesda Flames Saturday afternoon.

Season Impact

Win the win, the Leopards pick up their fifth-straight victory. It's the most consecutive wins for the Leopards since the 2008-09 squad won six straight games. La Verne improves to 5-1 overall. 

The Flames fall to 0-9.

How It Happened

Kuramoto did damage from long range, sinking five three-pointers in the best scoring performance of her young career. The freshman from Cypress added three rebounds and two steals in the win. The Leopards finished with 13 makes from beyond the arc.

Aaliyah Pauling had another standout offensive outing for La Verne. The junior surpassed her team-leading 13 points in last night's game and scored 15 points to go with seven rebounds, two steals, and two assists.

La Verne dominated off the boards, outrebounding the Flames 70-43 in the win. The Leopards grabbed 36 offensive boards and 34 defensive rebounds. Charnpreet Takher and Rebecca Horn each grabbed seven rebounds.

The Leopards came out firing in the second quarter, opening the period on a 13-0 run to jump out to a 39-17 lead. The run was capped by three-straight three-pointers Rachel Gafford, Horn, and Kuramoto. La Verne outscored the Flames 25-8 in the period to pull away for good.

Horn finished the game with nine points, four assists, and a steal. Alondra Ponce made two three-pointers on her way to eight total points. Kendall Stanley had a big all-around game, finishing with eight points, six rebounds, four steals, and an assist.

In a repeat of last night's performance, the Leopards kept the defensive pressure high from the start, forcing 16 first-half turnovers. It was Destinee Garcia who again led the defensive effort with five steals.

Sophomore point guard Jazzlyn Johnson totaled six points, six rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Garcia had a similar stat line with six points and six rebounds. Kayla Rubio grabbed six boards and Madison Hotchkiss grabbed five of her won.

La Verne totaled 21 steals and twelve different Leopards scored in the win.

Tanika Stephenson led the Flames with 18 points and nine rebounds with Lauryn Dodd scoring nine points.

Next Game

The Leopards return to SCIAC play next Wednesday, December 4 when they hose Redlands at 7 p.m.
