Flames Volunteer at Making Strides Against Breast Cancer

SAN DIEGO, California  -  In hopes of making the event a tradition, the Bethesda University women's basketball team took part in the American Cancer Society's "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" Walk held on Sunday, October 15 in Sand Diego. This year's walk took place on the weekend prior to the Flames' opening game week. The turn out was amazing! Family members from Orange County, Inland Empire and surrounding LA areas attended the walk with the Flames.

"This walk has become a part of our preseason," noted head coach Patty Medina. "Since last year, the student-athletes made the initial step, agreeing to take part in the walk prior to our games of the season. This year we had the opportunity to volunteer and fellowship which was a great opportunity for team building while contributing to the community. We hope to have an even greater turn out next season." The Flames decided to participate in the San Diego walk this year instead of LA because the majority of the team hails from San Diego County.

The 2017-2018 BU women's basketball team showed their unity and team spirit donning pink-themed shirts. They were at the finish line cheering on walkers and handing out participation stickers to everyone. "I liked that we had the opportunity to volunteer because we got to see and cheer on everyone that walked through the finish line." Junior guard, Victoria Stewart said, "This also allowed us time for team bonding and building chemistry while doing community service."

Each year basketball teams across the country participate in Breast Cancer Awareness games. This season the BU women's basketball team's "Pink Game" will take place on February 3rd against UC Santa Cruz. "Many of us have been touched by cancer in some way," said Medina. "We are proud to show our support and make a contribution.  Some of us walk in honor of a family member or a friend and many of us walk to show solidarity.  It's a small gesture, but it is a way for us to come together as a team prior to the start of the season and to help raise awareness."
