Bethesda's Gabby Robledo erupts for career-high 33 in loss to UC Merced

Junior Gabby Robledo did all she could for the Bethesda University women's basketball team scoring a career-high 33 points against UC Merced on Tuesday afternoon. Despite the strong outing, it wouldn't be enough as the Lady Flames squad fell to the Bobcats, 75-90.

Robledo started her big game right out of the gate dialing long distance just over two minutes. Finishing the half with 12 points and going 3 for 6 from long range. For the game, Robledo went 13-25 from the field, 6-13 from long range and 1-2 at the charity stripe. If that wasn't enough, she also added 3 rebounds, two assists and 5 steals in the 35 minutes.

Her point total is the second-most points in a single game at Bethesda University after Jonalynn Fuertes' 38 point game. Although this was her career-high, the Flames fans are become accustomed to big games from Robledo as she went for 19 in her first game back last week, also against UC Merced.

"From my personal perspective, I would rather have everyone be in double digits," Robledo said. "I'd rather win as a team than me having one of the best games of my career. I'd rather be winning and playing as a team and everyone else be scoring along with me."

Trailing by 22 at half, Robledo and the Flames trimmed the deficit back to ten with back-to-back triples from Taylor Smalley, Adelina Vanaga and Victoria Jackson. Robledo got loose for another long ball at the 8-minute mark of the fourth quarter which allowed Bethesda to outscore UC Merced 27 to 19. Adelina Vanaga finished with 12 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists. DQ Townsend contributed 10 rebounds for the Flames.

"You can't win a game with 25 turnovers. That's our Achilles' heel." Head Coach Medina said. "We definitely have a lot of work to do. Our team has tremendous potential. It's just that we have to work together. Everyone has to be fully invested for the benefit of the team and not self, on offense and defense."

The loss drops the Flames to 3-11 on the season and continues a streak of 5 straight losses. The Flames will be back in action as they travel to Newberg, Oregon for a Thursday contest against top ranked (7-1) George Fox University at 4:00 p.m.
