Lamunu's Dominant Presence Too Much For Flames

Basketball is a team game, but sometimes one dominant player can virtually take charge of a contest. In response, coaches employ various strategies to at least limit the key player's scoring output and prevent her from completely dominating the game.

Keeping Vanguard's Claire Lamunu from having yet another great game was Bethesda University's women's basketball team's focus going into the game against Vanguard University on Monday night. However, Lamunu was unstoppable and finished with a tally of 22 points and 24 rebounds in the 71-49 Vanguard victory. Bethesda was outrebounded 56 to 36 with Lamunu leading the way. The Flames were able to hold her scoreless the fourth quarter but by then the damage had been done.

Top ranked Vanguard started the game strong and placed Bethesda in a 35 to 18 deficit by halftime. The Flames continued to fight, lead by Estela Gutierrez's three 3 pointers in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, they were too little too late. Gutierrez finished with 20 points and 6 rebounds. DQ Townsend pulled 10 rebounds as well. The Flames were able to hold a great three point shooting team to only 24% for the night from behind the arc. However, Bethesda obly shot 25% for the entire game.

The Flames have a week to prepare to take on San Diego Christian College on Saturday, Dec. 17th in San Diego. The Hawks are having an amazing season so far with a record of 9-1.
