Second OT Victory

ANAHEIM, CA - The Flames had started the season slow with 2 quick losses. However, the Flames won 3 straight games after Lucas Fonseca made the game-winning overtime goal against the Whittier College Poets, which put them at a 3-2 winning record. The next 3 games were against difficult opponents as the Bethesda lost to UC San Diego, Arizona Christian, and Vanguard. With a 3-5 record and being halfway through the season, the Flames were desperate to get back on the right track with a win against St. Katherine.


It was a great start the Flames as they found the back of the net within the first 90 seconds. A St. Katherine's defender misplayed a ball directly to Mario Silva, who went on to slot home the 1-on-1 opportunity.  But the Firebirds answered back right away, scoring the equalizer 6 minutes and 30 seconds into the match.

 

The Flames were awarded an opportune free kick about 35 yards out from the Firebirds goal. The Flames, who made good with their chance, sending a dangerous ball into the box and finding the net to take a 2-1 lead into half time. It was a great play Felipe Assis scored off of an assist from Guilherme Sampaio. The Firebirds responded as one of their players sent a cross from the left side, finding a teammate for a headed finish to level the match at 2-2. After 90 minutes of play, the game was sent into overtime.


After 115 minutes of soccer, the Flames put the dagger in the Firebird's hearts with the game-winning goal by Kaleb Soares. This is the second time that the Flames have won in exciting overtime fashion! The Flames are now 4-5 and are looking to continue their good teamwork into the second half of the season. The Flames travel to Marymount California University on Tuesday, September 24, 2019, at 1 pm at El Camino College.
