Flames Win In OT

The Men's Soccer Team had a great comeback win on Friday, August 30, 2019, to defeat Whittier College in overtime. The Poets scored at the 18th minute when Matteo Loi scored of a rebound in midair with a powerful shot that hit the net within a moment that it left his foot. The Flames kept battling as they had multiple opportunities with 11 shots on goal. Even so, the Flames could not capitalize until the 85th minute of the game when the Flames were pressing and Icaro Nemeth was able to steal a ball near the goal and chip it in to tie the game. It was at this moment were Bethesda took the momentum and created multiple opportunities to try to finish the game. The game went into overtime and the Poets were pressing the Flames as they were trying to regain the momentum. However, the Flames created a great opportunity as Kaleb Soares was fouled near the goalie box and the Flames were awarded a foul shot. The Flames were going to run a set from the spot of the foul but Lucas Foncesa saw an opening on the left side of the goal and decided to take the opportunity to shoot the ball. Fonseca's attempt paid off as the ball hit the back of the net and the Bethesda Team and crowd were celebrating the game-winning shot. Fonseca's heroics lead the Flames to their first victory of the season (1-2). The Men's Soccer Team hosts William Jessup next Saturday, September 7.
