Flames Stay Hot at World Series

The Bethesda Flames started their 2017 NCCAA World Series run with a win against #7 Oakland City University by a score of 9-4. 

 

Nathan Munoz (2-5, two runs scored, two runs batted in), Kevin Maxey (2-4 one double, three runs batted in), and Daniel Arellano (2-5, one double, one run scored, one run batted in) led the way offensively for the Flames. All nine starters recorded a hit in the contest. 

 

The Flames got on the board first in the third inning. Ryan McPhillips led off with a single. Nathan Munoz singled off the wall in right moving McPhillips to third. Kevin Maxey drove a ball to the track in center scoring McPhillips. After an error allowed Adrian Flores to reach, Daniel Arellano helped his own cause singling in Munoz. 

 

The Flames would surrender one run in the fifth, but immediately respond in the sixth. 

 

Daniel Gutierrez drove a one out single to right field and Raul Abundis doubled to left to put runners at second and third. After a groundout pinch hitter Ivan Galindo battled out a walk after being down 0-2 to extend the inning. Nathan Munoz came through delivering a 2-RBI  single to center to make it 4-1 Flames. Maxey followed with a double to left scoring Galindo and Munoz for the 6-1 advantage. 

 

Oakland City would push one across in the sixth which was matched in the seventh with a Raul Abundis sacrifice fly. 

 

Oakland City added two more in the 7th to close the gap to 7-4. 

 

MASON, Ohio - It remained that way until the top of the ninth when Adrian Flores got things going with a single. Arellano doubled to right field moving pinch runner Ryan Loyd to third. Alex Rodriguez followed with a single to left scoring Loyd and Arellano pushing the score to its final of 9-4. 

 

Flames started Daniel Arellano picked up the win (7-3) throwing 5 2/3 innings allowing six hits, two earned runs and striking out six. 

 

Thomas Shelley was strong out of the bullpen earning the save (1). He threw three scoreless innings allowing two hits, one walk, and had three strikeouts. 

 

The Flames are 1-0 in pool B and will play again Thursday May 25 at 8:00 P.M. EST(5:00 P.M. PST) against #2 Emmanuel College at Prasco Park.
